Concerns about property tax reappraisals?

As many all over Forsyth County have learned, to their frustration, tax assessments for 2025 have been sent out and most homeowners in the county have seen massive increases in their appraised tax values.

RTHA reached out to the Forsyth County Commissioners and received the following response from Commissioner Don Martin:

"Our property tax assessor, John Burgiss, has reported substantial property value increases over the past four years.  The tax assessment is driven by comparable sales from similar properties and in similar areas across the county.   All property owners have an opportunity for an informal appeal by calling the tax office and talking through their concerns and if there are no changes, they can file a formal appeal.  Appeal instructions are included with the property valuation information taxpayers you just received.

Commissioners will discuss and publish the revenue neutral tax rate which is the rate that would generate the same amount of revenue next year as this year.  In the past Commissioners have typically adopted that rate.  On one occasion in my memory the Commissioners adopted a rate that produced slightly less revenue than the revenue neutral rate and sometimes they have adopted a rate that produced revenue slightly higher than the revenue neutral rate.  But the revenue neutral rate is an average.  Even with that rate, some tax bills will be slightly higher and others lower.  So you should not expect much of an increase, if any,  in actual taxes paid next year than you paid this year."
